Jennie Ottinger was definitely the standout at Nada and the red dots by nearly every one of her painting confirmed we were not alone in feeling this way. We love the gesture of her brush, the soft color palette and their unfinished nature.

O.H.W.O.W. is quickly becoming the coolest event space in Wynwood. Aaron Bondaroff and Al Moran have captured the spirit of Basel and continue to bring innovative shows and great parties long after this epic weekend is over and the cultural drought sets in. That said, they put on their Sunday best this year with four great events. They brought Max Fish from NYC, had Danger Mouse and David Lynch collaborate for Dark Night of the Soul and partnered with Lance Armstrong in the charity event Stages. Their show It Ain’t Fair was one of their most impressive projects to date with work from 30 artists including Rita Ackermann, Tim Barber, Julia Chiang, Nate Lowman, Barry McGee and Neck Face.

Even though we didn’t make it to the Rubell breakfast we heard it was fabulous as always. This year they served a budget friendly menu of coffee and donuts imagined as a piece of pop art. The event marked the opening of their new exhibit Beg Borrow or Steal discussing the importance of appropriation. It was a literal who’s who of the art world displaying Jeff Koons vacuums, Richard Prince Marlboro Men, Cindy Sherman photographs and of course the master himself Andy Warhol.

Berlin based street artist EVOL was the standout new talent at Scope brought by Wilde Gallery. EVOL, known for his high rises stenciled onto electrical cabinets, has applied his talent for trompe l’oeil to a similar project using found pieces of cardboard. Using layers and layers of stencil EVOL incorporates the existing print and textures of the cardboard to define the architectural elements in these apartment scenes.

Walking through the main fair I stumbled upon Martha Rosler’s Beauty Knows No Pain series created in the late sixties early seventies. At the time Rosler was considered underground, creating these photo-collages for feminist fanzines. Today she lives and works in Brooklyn.

Shepard Fairey’s mural for the Wynwood Walls went up last night. Swoon, Os Gemeos, Barry McGee and Aiko are out there working.

During Art Basel Miami comes into focus as the center of the art world but there is an under current of creativity throughout the rest of the year that makes this city the perfect location for the fair. A few days before the art world descends from museums, galleries and studios around the world we snapped some of the local street art found in the downtown and Wynwood areas.

A weekend at Art Basel means blue chip parties, cool concerts, endless art fairs and short beach breaks. Packing accordingly with versatile cotton dresses, a pair of architectural booties, a structured blazer and a chic neoprene bikini.
